Urban Technologies @ City Lab

Innovative urban technologies are being developed to automate or at least facilitate municipal activities.  Examples of these activities are the Ultrasound Boat Monitoring project and the Turbulence Mapping project that are aimed at the development of innovative instruments to monitor of the impacts of boat traffic on the city of Venice.  The technology development takes place primarily in the City Lab Hardware Laboratory in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at WPI.

Traffic Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with the Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as with the Civil and Environmental Engineering departments at WPI and will include the development of devices for:

±                        Segment Volume Recording, Turning Movement Recording, Light Timing, Ultrasound Boat Monitoring

Road Infrastructure Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with the Pavement Research Laboratory at WPI and will include the development of devices for:

±                        Pothole Mapping based on our technology developed in Venice for Turbulence Mapping

Water and Sewer Infrastructure Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with the Oakhill Company and E-DesignDynamics and will include the development and application of:

±                        Hi-Flo Vacuum Sewers, Water Distribution Systems

Physical Maintenance Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with the E-campus initiative and with the collaboration of the WPI Plant Services dept. (Mr. John Miller) and will include the development and application of:

±                        On-site Location-aware Inspection Technology, “Pull” technology, Urban NEMS and MEMS

Energy Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with Prof. Jiusto (IGSD) and will include the development and application of alternative, renewable technologies and techniques such as:

±                        Wind, Urban Micro-currents, Geo-thermal, Fuel-cells, Energy Savings, Micro-hydroelectric, Tidal Energy

Environmental Technologies

These will be developed in conjunction with Prof. Mathisen (CEE)and will include the development and application of environmental technologies and techniques such as:

±                        Bio-Phito Sewage Treatment, Eco-hydrology
