A
primary focus of our scout troop has been the development of
outdoor skills.
Within the
course of a year, we regularly take part in weekend and week-long
backpacking
trips, canoe trips beetween 2 and 7 days, and snow shoe hike
trips.
Skills that are
taught through the regular Monday night meetings and on weekend
(or longer)
trips include:
- water safety, survival and canoe "how to..." skills
- hiking, orienteering, land navigation and bush-whacking skills
- first aid skills
- food and fire planning, safety, and general "how to..." skills
- leadership and group dynamic skills
- speciality skills such as winter survival and snow shoeing
- woods skills including plant identification, lashings and the use of lashings,
and use of camp tools skills- various merit badge skills such as wilderness survival, canoeing, backpacking,
swimming practice, ecology and so forth
Although
survival skills are taught on a regular basis, it is important to
stay current in these
skills.
Since we can not possibly cover all aspects of wilderness
survival, this web site has
been
created to provide links to other sites where any interested
scout (or anyone else for
that
matter) can find further information about wilderness survival.
If
the information you are looking for is not here, try searching Yahoo! using the key
words
"wilderness survival". Most of the sites listed below were discovered
in this manner.
