E-Buildings @ City Lab
In 2003-2004, we completed the mapping of all campus
buildings at WPI onto GIS layers.
Three-dimensional models of several academic buildings were also
completed. The students developed a
system that will allow the management of the principal safety apparatus in each
buildings, including fire extinguishers, emergency lights and exit signs. The team also prototyped a system for the
management of satellite collection areas for hazardous waste. In 2004-2005, a second project included other
academic buildings and incorporated environmental aspects, such as the
management of back-flow preventers, as well as the
issue of energy efficiency in the buildings, based on Oxford University’s “40% House” publication. The 2005-2006
project reviewed
the work done so far and engaged insurance, building and fire inspectors, both
outside and within WPI, to determine what information would be most useful to
them in managing and maintaining the buildings.
The team developed the specifications for an on-line building management
system that will put all of the necessary information at these professionals’
fingertips.
